Davy’s Dragon Castle by Mary & Michael Schmidt

Every once in a while you come upon a book, a poem or a song whose core message is so empowering and essential that it needs to be shared everywhere. Two of my favourites while growing up were coincidentally, both co-written and sung by Michael Jackson. “We are the World” and “Black or White”. Songs that were about equality, diversity and oneness.

Davy’s Dragon Castle by Mary & Michael Schmidt is a little book with a powerful message. A message most needed in today’s world. One of Anti-racism which goes deeper into its roots and is actually about anti-differentiationism (not the word to do with math but a word I take to mean anti-difference of any kind.)

Set in Dragon town, a land faraway and accessible to only those who knew its magical location, live two dragons, Davy and his wife Lily. Davy is a kind ruler who treats everyone in his kingdom with love and niceness. Every year he throws the doors of his castle open to one and all for the biggest Christmas party of them all.

Wow. I wouldn’t refuse going to a party hosted by a dragon. Would you? It would be such a blast. (Pun intended)

Through the events leading up to the party and the party itself Mary and Michael brilliantly bring about an awareness of equality, inclusivity and a love for all humanity. They do it in such subtle ways too. One of the ones that really caught my heart was them showing a tiny dragon (called a Squee) with a prosthetic leg able to fly around and enjoy life to the fullest.

The book is choc-full-of many wonderful experiences and messages that will help develop social and emotional learning in children both young and old.

A Christmas tale that is really needed all year round.

So glad I got this readers copy, it was truly a ray of sunshine.Books like these need to be shared far and wide. Hope you liked my fair and honest review.

Happy Reading
