No Bear Is An Island by Mawson
“It’s all so quiet. So empty.”
No
Bear Is an Island, written by Mawson the Bear (yes, a writer bear!), is a treasure—not just for
the children it is written for, but for everyone. And I truly mean everyone.
Filled with gorgeous stop-motion
photographs of irresistibly cute teddy bears, the book could easily fool you
into thinking it's simply a sweet children's story.
IT
IS... BUT IT ISN'T.
Beneath its charming exterior lies a
powerful message about something our society is facing in epidemic proportions.
We are more connected than ever before, and
yet we are increasingly alone.
Why?
Are the pressures of the world around us
causing us to retreat into a bubble?
A bubble of self-doubt, worry, loneliness, stress,
heartache, and sadness.
We slowly drift away from those around us
until that bubble becomes an island—one that very few people can reach.
Slowly, almost without realizing it, we
begin to push away our family and friends. We start thinking in terms of "me" instead of "we." A world that for myriad
reasons becomes centred on myself first
may offer instant gratification, but over time it leads only to isolation.
And isolation has a way of making us our
own harshest critics. Without the support of those around us, we can easily
spiral into a bottomless cavern of loneliness.
"WE ARE EACH APART. LIKE ISLANDS.
IF ONLY... THERE WERE A WAY TO BRING US TOGETHER."
THERE IS. 😊
(Spoiler alert!)
Throughout the story, Mawson gently reminds
us that a "myself first" mind-set
doesn't have to define us. It can be replaced with something far more
meaningful: togetherness.
Because it is only with our friends, our
families, and our communities that we truly become us.
A happier, kinder, and healthier us.
And when we are together, we can achieve
almost anything. Our dreams soar, our courage is strengthened, and our
self-doubts begin to fade as we work side by side towards a common
goal—whatever that goal may be.
It is with our friends by our side that we
can truly, truly shine.
As Bob
Marley so beautifully sang;
“One love, one heart
Let's get together and feel alright.”
What I especially loved is that the book
never feels preachy. Instead, it quietly plants seeds of empathy, kindness,
courage, and friendship through simple storytelling and beautiful visuals.
Sometimes the gentlest stories carry the most profound lessons, and No
Bear Is an Island is one of those rare books that children will enjoy
while adults may find themselves reflecting on long after they've turned the
final page.
This book is filled to the brim with
positive messages about kindness, resilience, courage, love, and, above all,
the importance of friendship and belonging. It gently reminds us that we are
always stronger when we choose connection over isolation and "we" over "me."
So
glad I got this readers copy, and serendipitously am reading this gorgeous book
on friendship during the friendship day weekend. Hope you liked my fair and
honest review.
Happy Reading😊
